How to Build the Perfect Charcuterie Board — Don’t Forget Dessert

I love a good charcuterie board. If I see one on a menu, I am ordering it,  and if I am hosting for a holiday with my family or an evening with friends, it is always a must have.

What I love most about them is the way it effortlessly brings people together. Not to mention, there is something so easy and generous about setting one out. No one has to sit down right away. No one has to wait for a formal first course. People can gather, pour a glass of wine, reach for something delicious, and settle in.

Most boards have the usual favorites: a few good cheeses, salami or prosciutto, fresh grapes, olives, nuts, crackers, maybe a little honey or jam.

All wonderful.

But I always like to add something sweet.

Why I add caramels to a charcuterie board

A small bowl of handmade caramels is one of my favorite charcuterie board additions because it gives people a sweet finish without having to serve a full dessert.

They’re easy to pick up, easy to share, and they pair beautifully with so many things already on the board.

A caramel next to a creamy cheese, fresh fruit, toasted nuts, and a glass of wine feels simple, but special. It gives people one more little thing to discover.

And if your gatherings are anything like mine, someone will take one, pause for a second, and then ask where the rest of the box is.

What to put on a charcuterie board

A beautiful board doesn’t need to be complicated. I usually like to include:

  • A soft cheese, like brie or goat cheese

  • A firmer cheese, like aged cheddar or manchego

  • Something savory, like salami, prosciutto, or olives

  • Something fresh, like grapes, berries, sliced pears, or figs

  • Something crunchy, like Marcona almonds, pistachios, crackers, or crusty bread

  • Something sweet, like honey, jam, dark chocolate, or handmade caramels

That last part is easy to forget, but it makes such a difference.

A little sweet bite gives the board balance.

Caramel pairings for a charcuterie board

A few combinations I love and have become known for:

Sea Salt Caramels with creamy brie, aged cheddar, toasted nuts, Champagne, sparkling wine, or coffee.

Vanilla + Toasted Almond Caramels with fresh grapes, dried figs, pears, coffee, or a glass of red wine.

Seasonal caramels with whatever is on the table that night — fruit, cheese, wine, or something a little unexpected.

If you’re making a board for a dinner party, wine night, bridal shower, graduation gathering, or weekend with friends, The Hosting Box is a beautiful option because it gives you enough caramels to set out and share.

For a smaller gathering or thank-you gift, The Discovery Box or The Thank You Gift also work beautifully.

Keep it simple

One thing I have learned over the years is that the best charcuterie boards don’t have to be elaborate.

Choose a few good cheeses, something savory, something fresh, something crunchy, and one sweet thing people will remember.

That’s enough.

Because in the end, people don’t usually remember whether there were five cheeses or seven.

They remember standing around the table, reaching for one more bite, and asking, “Wait… can I have another caramel?”
