It starts on a dusty hillside in Lockwood, California, at an Easter gathering that's still with me all these years later.
A Ranch Full of Family
Growing up, Easter wasn't just a holiday in my family. It was an event. Four generations, all in one place, at a family ranch not far from where my great-grandmother Edith first made her caramels.
Every year, well over a hundred family members would show up in the morning sun and stay until the sky went pink. There were wagon races down the hills, kids running everywhere, hundreds of dyed eggs hidden across the oak trees for an egg hunt that took most of the day. Tractor rides. Grass stains. Really good food. Everyone went home a little dirty and full of memories.
We haven't gathered like that in many years, but we still talk about it often. Those days are woven into how our family shows up for each other, and they're a big part of why Sugar + Spoon exists at all.
Food as a Way of Saying "I Thought of You"
Back then, caramels were a Christmas tradition, made once a year. But the spirit behind everything we brought to that Easter table was exactly the same.
Every dish carried a story. Every recipe was made with intention. Bringing food to the table was always our family's way of saying, "I made this for you."
That's still the heart of every batch of caramels I make today, using my great-grandmother's recipe from the 1930s. Simple, high-quality ingredients, made by hand, in small batches, right here in Paso Robles, California.
